How will learning to code make me a better journalist?

I’ve meet a lot of journalists, especially ones early in their careers, whose main motivation for becoming a reporter is to get their bylines in a national magazine or their faces on TV.

At the same time, they hear that learning to code is something they should do because “that’s where the industry is going.”

So does “journalism+code = awesome” for everyone? And even if not, how does learning to code make someone a better journalist?

Chrys, it really depends on the definition of "coding" in this context. The industry is going to the online world, there's no denying that, so mastering a wide array of tools (CMS, social networking, word processors, mac/pc/linux), yes, that's a big help. You do not want to have to rely on a third party to get your content out there. If by 'coding' you mean the skills involved to create the technology rather than operate it, then no, I don't think it's very necessary, that's what engineers are for.
