WordPress as a publication CMS: What are your most useful/valuable plugins?

3

I’ve got a student team building a new Web site in WordPress. We anticipate refreshing the site on a regular cycle, each time with a brand new package consisting of multiple related content items (text stories, timelines, photos, videos, etc.). Old packages should be archived and continue to be viewed as a package. We basically want to use a presentation style that isn’t very “bloggy.”

WordPress mavens: What are your favorite, most useful and/or most valuable plugins for a site like the one I’m describing – more like a publication than a blog?

More specifically, how about plugins useful in the following scenarios:
– multiple authors, multiple editors
– desirability of archiving photos for future re-use
– desirability, after some period of time, of archiving these packages in categories and subcategories (and having navigation that adjusts to categorization changes)

I echo Michael's point about using a theme to get news CMS-style functionality.

I'd recommend looking at WooThemes' news and magazines offerings. Custom navigation, one notable WooThemes feature, is actually coming to WordPress 3.0.

  1. I also like Woothemes (using one for the main Hacks/Hackers blog), stylish with nice customization abilities.

Check out this post -- it has some good suggestions, but I wouldn't say all are must-haves:

If you want to include timelines (and maps, and sortable/filterable lists, and other kinds of visualizations) you might like a plugin we've been working on called datapress.  It lets you incorporate our Exhibit rich-data visualization framework into your posts.  You can download it from our project page or from the wordpress site.

For instance, there is W3 Total Cache for boosting performance. Hopefully your web server allows you to cache your stuff in memcache. Mine does and WP is *a lot* faster this way. Also you want Login LockDown which makes the WP login form much more secure. It will block requests from IPs that entered the wrong password three times. Then there is Organize Series which is great if you want to write, well, multiple posts that belong to a series.Top Level Categories allows you to skip the /category/ part in your categories urls. Handy if you just want something like http://mydomain.com/politics/.The plugin Redirection is perfect if you want to keep some old links working, or have any other redirection-based tasks to do.Make sure to install WordPress Database Backup. It will send zipped backups of your WP database to an email address of your choice. WordPress Backup (by BTE) will even send you a ZIP with all your post images.
